Social Protection Scheme
The National Informal Workers Social Protection Scheme (NISPS), initiated by the Uganda Markets & Allied Employees Union (UMAEU), is a transformative initiative designed to address the critical gap in social protection for workers in the informal economy. Unlike their counterparts in the public and formal sectors, who benefit from pension schemes and mandatory savings through the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), many informal workers, including market vendors, boda boda riders, taxi drivers, oall lack clear retirement plans and often survive on hand-to-mouth incomes. NISPS aims to provide a comprehensive safety net for informal workers, ensuring they can save for retirement, manage difficult times such as sickness or death, and secure education for their dependents through an inclusive insurance plan.
