The Uganda Markets and Allied Employees Union (UMAEU) is launching the UMAEU Science and Technology Institute, a pioneering vocational school designed to equip informal traders with cutting-edge skills for the modern economy. This initiative will bridge the digital divide, promote sustainable practices, and foster innovation among vendors—ensuring they thrive in an era of rapid technological change.

Key Focus Areas:

1. Digital Skills Training:
   • Practical courses in e-commerce, mobile money, and digital marketing to help vendors leverage platforms like the Binjii Appand expand their customer base.
2. E-Waste Management:
   • Hands-on training in recycling and safe disposal of electronic waste, turning market vendors into sustainability champions.
3. Future-Ready Initiatives:
   • Innovation labs for designing low-cost tech solutions (e.g., solar-powered tools, smart storage) tailored to informal trade needs.
4. Women-Focused Programs:

Dedicated scholarships and mentorship for women vendors, who make up 71.9% of UMAEU’s membership, to close the gender gap in tech.
