The Informal Workers Social Protection Scheme (ISPS), partnered with Patasente to launch Mkozi Life a retirement savings account for all its members. Members open a Mkozi Life account with Patasente and save into the ISPS.
The ISPS initiated by the Uganda Markets and Allied Employees Union (UMAEU), is a transformative initiative designed to address the critical gap in social protection for workers in the informal economy. Unlike their counterparts in the public and formal sectors, who benefit from pension schemes and mandatory savings through the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), many informal workers, including market vendors, boda boda riders, taxi drivers, all lack clear retirement plans and often survive on hand-to-mouth incomes. NISPS aims to provide a comprehensive safety net for informal workers, ensuring they can save for retirement, manage difficult times such as sickness or death, and secure education for their dependents through an inclusive insurance plan.
